I was invited to University School of Design at Mysore (USD, they call it), to give a talk to students on Education and Technology and also to interact with faculty on how to harness the power of Internet in Architecture Education.
I spent one full day at USD, interacted with students and teachers both. USD, has an open studio culture, with an overlooking area, divided with mobile partitions, where students from one batch can literally see and walk into other batches, junior and senior both. The mobile partitions were put to life by students and sported many things like drawings, murals, graffiti and models. I oberved students, teachers and other staff freely walking through the studio, although at some places some juries, studios and reviews were in progress.
Right from the entrance, USD keeps one engaged with dynamic visuals, whether you are in a staircase, corridors, rooms or studios. Surprisingly toilets were very clean, no graffiti? Disappointing. Also, lift, which may be because it was newly installed. I am sure students will come up with something there as well.
Concluding, at USD, I found that environment was very conducive to learning and teaching. The openness in studio should surely give a better exposure to students and create a healthy rapport between juniors and seniors.
